All About the Benjamins

Knowing the stakes, Matt and I anxiously await our shot at Mohegan

It’s about damn time a casino paid off…and with what timing, too.

Over the weekend Carm and I hit up New Britain, CT for some good old birthday fun. I turned 24 on Saturday - it sounds kind of old in my head, but really I’ve got more than half a decade to go before 30 so I guess it can’t be that bad (sorry, Matt).

It ended up being a beautiful (but freezing) day on Saturday, much better than the rainy/shitty/gray weather that we drove through the night before. After a nice afternoon of relaxation (which was really needed) it was time to hit Mohegan Sun.

After some fairly good (but overpriced) Asian food we caught the Celtics play the Knicks in some NBA preseason action. The Knicks looked terrible, and will be lucky to win 20 games this year - yes, I know their preseason record is good, but who gives a shit? It’s preseason. Maybe if Curry wasn’t so lazy and Starbury learned how to distribute the basketball things would turn out OK. I can’t believe that Isiah will have them ready to rip for the regular season. It was 61-44 at halftime…we left halfway through the 3rd quarter for some gambling.

After walking around two casinos looking for some cheap blackjack tables (there was nothing under $25/hand on a Saturday night, but that’s not unexpected) we settled at a row of slot machines off the beaten path. After moving over to sit by Carm (I couldn’t let her gamble all alone), I threw in a $20 bill and started pulling on that arm. $.50 pulls to start - I figured it was a good amount to bet. Only about 10 pulls in, I hit 3 double diamonds - JACKPOT! $420 later, I was a happy birthday boy.

Feeling accomplished, I tried my hand at a blackjack table. I was up over $100 for a while, but then a couple of players made some really ridiculous moves and the dealer began drawing out 5 and 6 card 20’s and 21’s. Not my night at the BJ table. I did manage to cut my losses at $100 - so I netted $300 overall.

All in all, a great weekend. I want to thank everyone who made it possible - Mom and Dad for making the plans to go out to Connecticut, Matt and Rachel for giving us a place to sleep while we were in town, and of course Carm for having the keen sense of what slot machine will pay off next. Thanks hun!
