Queens is burning

So you’re the New York Mets - owners of a 6.5 game lead with 17 games to go - and you have a 3 game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium that could essentially put the division away. All you need to do is win one game to keep the Phillies at a distance. But you don’t…you lose all three games in rather embarrassing fashion. In the second game you waste a brilliant start by Pedro Martinez, and in the third you commit 6 errors and lose the game by 4.
So, certainly a series with the Washington Nationals is just what the doctor ordered. After all, the Nats are last in the NL in runs scored and 13 out of 16 in team batting average…but instead, you commit another 4 errors in the first game and…
OK, I think you’ve got my point. As obnoxious as it was…
The last three games have been rather pathetic and quite devastating to the overall team morale- between the fielding in that last game against Philly and the first game in Washington, I’m not sure how this team even has the division lead at this point in the season. And then John Maine throws tonight (remember, he’s fighting for a potential post-season rotation spot) and gives up 8 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings…awesome job, John, really nice stuff. Next time, be sure to bring a can of vaseline out to the mound so these weak hitters miss your meaty fastballs and hanging sliders. The problem tonight, and the last couple of games, has been pitching over the fielding. That ship needs to be righted very soon.
That’s all for now…I’m exhausted from watching this team.
