Doomsday Scenarios
After winning 3 of 4 in Miami, the Mets returned to Shea tonight in hopes of pushing their division lead all the way out to 3 games with 6 left to play- it wasn’t to be, however, as the Nationals rolled over the Mets by a score of 13-4.
You know, as down on these guys as I have been lately, this was bound to happen. A big game from Pelfrey tonight would have been a huge boost, but that’s not something you can expect to happen. My hopes are much higher for Tuesday’s game with Glavine going, and then there’s that tricky game on Wednesday with Philip Humber making his major league debut as a starter.
With the Phillies breathing right down the Mets’ collective necks, I thought it’d be a good time to spell out the Mets doomsday scenarios heading into the final 6 games of the season.
NL East Standings
Mets 87-69 — Magic Number 5
Phils 85-71 2GB
Mets Remaining Schedule
vs. WAS (2), vs. STL (1), vs. FLA (3)
Phillies Remaining Schedule
vs. ATL (3), vs. WAS (3)
At this point, even if the Mets play .500 baseball the rest of the way, the Phillies would have to win out the season to overtake the division. If they lose one game, a tiebreaker would be played in Philadelphia. All is moot, of course, if the Mets can find 5 wins in these last 6 games to take the division cleanly. With the Braves going into Philly for the next 3 days, you can probably bet on at least one more Philly loss.
This should be a fun race to the finish…if I make it there.
